Stairs At Eighty
Four movements, one cue each, three days a week.
The goal is simple: carry your own groceries up two flights of stairs at age eighty without pausing on the landing. That requires specific leg power, hip hinge capacity, calf stiffness, and grip endurance. If you start this block today, you build the reserve in twelve weeks.
You run these four exercises three non-consecutive days a week, such as Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Each pattern directly preserves a functional movement pattern that aging typically degrades first: the knee flexion of standing up, the single-leg step-up, the floor-to-waist lift, and carrying dead weight. Here are the movements with the single cue that keeps each one honest.
Every program has one silent rule that ruins the outcome when ignored. In this block, eccentric control is everything. Dropping quickly onto the chair or letting your back foot slam into the ground during step-downs removes the exact loading that strengthens your tendons and bone mineral density.

Dropping into the seat
Why it's a problem
Collapsing onto the chair during squats eliminates eccentric tension and risks spinal compression against the seat.
Potential Consequences
Eliminates quadricep loading on the descent
Jarring impact to the lumbar vertebrae
Prevents connective tissue adaptation in the knee
Do not add weight until your reps look identical from the first repetition to the last. Move through the block across three distinct four-week phases to protect connective tissue before chasing heavier loads. Track each week's intent so you do not rush the baseline.

🌱
Weeks 1–4: Motor Patterning
Establish tempo control. Complete all sets bodyweight or very light to adapt tendons.
02
⚡
Weeks 5–8: Strength Reserve
Add external load on carries and deadlifts. Rest 90 seconds between sets.
03
🏔️
Weeks 9–12: Power Capacity
Accelerate the upward phase while keeping the lowering phase controlled at two full seconds.
You now have the exact movements, tempos, and progression. Check your setup before you start week one, especially the height of your step.
