The dishwasher loading argument
My partner says the dishwasher must be loaded logically and that his way is the logical way. I have a physics degree. He has a strong jaw. How do I win this without ending the marriage?
You cannot win this, and I say that as someone who has read the manual. A dishwasher has exactly one logic, which is water has to reach the dirt, and both of you are violating it in different ways. He stacks for density; you stack for hydrodynamics. The plates in the middle of the bottom rack are clean either way. The argument is about the cereal bowls.
Here is the experiment. Load it his way tonight, yours tomorrow, and photograph the top rack before and after. Do not argue; measure. In my experience the loser of this test is always the person who put a bowl face-up, and face-up bowls do not respect degrees or jaws.
If the photographs are a tie, the dishwasher is good enough that it does not matter, and the fight was never about the dishwasher. Buy a second set of cereal bowls. It is cheaper than the other thing.
