The Night Shift
Rows of racks, blinking in the dark. A single fan spins down. The hum changes pitch. MARA, forties, hoodie, does not look up from the terminal. A phone buzzes on the floor beside her, face down, and keeps buzzing. The temperature readout on the wall ticks up one degree.
(typing)
Nothing's broken. It was just never meant to run this long.
(on speaker, from the floor)
The dashboard says it's fine.
The dashboard was written by the same people who wrote the thing. It is loyal.
So what do we tell the client?
(finally looking up at the racks)
That it is in degraded mode. Which is what it has been in since the day they turned it on. The only thing that changed tonight is that we noticed.
The fan has stopped. Mara sits on the floor beside the phone, back against a server rack that is warm to the touch. On the terminal, a progress bar at ninety-nine percent has not moved for some time.
(to the phone, which has stopped buzzing)
Tell them we're restoring from backup.
We don't have a backup.
Then we're about to find out what the backup was.
