Entropy, four ways
Entropy
an analogy
A tidy room has one arrangement that counts as tidy and millions that count as messy. Leave it alone and it drifts toward messy, not because mess is a force but because there are more ways to be messy. Entropy is the count of those ways; the universe drifts upward in it for the same reason.
a worked example
Shuffle a new deck. Before the shuffle it was in one special order out of a number with sixty-eight digits. After the shuffle it is in one of the others. You will never shuffle it back, not because it is forbidden but because one in 10^68 does not come up. That is entropy increasing.
the mechanism
Hot coffee has fast molecules; the room has slow ones. They bump. Energy spreads from fast to slow until the speeds match, because a spread-out arrangement has vastly more microstates than a concentrated one. The coffee cools and cannot un-cool; the second law is just counting.
in one sentence
Entropy is a measure of how many ways a system could be arranged without you noticing the difference, and it rises because there are always more of those ways than the one you started with.
